Breast Reduction: Easing Discomfort, Improving Body Balance

Breast reduction, or reduction mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure for women experiencing physical discomfort or emotional distress due to overly large breasts. Balancing form with function, reduction mammoplasty aims to reduce breast size while improving shape and position, addressing both aesthetic concerns and health-related issues.

A patient may be interested in reduction mammoplasty to:

    • Improve posture while also reducing physical discomfort (back, neck, and/or shoulder pain) or skin irritation attributed to large breasts
    • Create a more balanced and natural appearance
    • Elevate self-confidence and self-image
    • Reduce or remove barriers and limitations to physical activities

    Who performs breast reduction surgery?

Reduction mammoplasty is performed by a skilled plastic surgeon.

    What happens during reduction mammoplasty?

Performed under general anesthesia, breast reduction surgery usually takes about three to five hours depending on the extent of reduction required and specific technique used. The surgeon will make an incision around the nipple in order to remove excess tissue, skin, and fat.

A thin tube may be inserted near one or more incisions to drain fluid and prevent swelling. A special compression bra may be recommended to provide support for healing. Initial swelling and discomfort are normal and typically subside within a few weeks. Most patients resume light daily activities within two to three weeks while full recovery and final results may take up to six months.

    Things to consider:

    • Breastfeeding: possible after surgery but may be more difficult than with other types of breast surgeries resulting from lower milk production and/or damage to nerves that are important for lactation.

Nipple Sensation: temporary loss of feeling or changes in sensation are common but permanent loss of nipple sensation is rare.
