– What is a Dental implant?
A dental implant is a prosthetic replacement for a missing tooth root. Natural teeth are comprised of the crown and the root. The crown is the visible section of a tooth; it is covered by white enamel. The crown is supported by the root, which is not visible as the it extends down into the jawbone. The root is the part of the tooth that is replaced by an implant. An implant consists of three parts: the implant itself (a small post, usually made of titanium, that is inserted directly into the jawbone), a connector (to join the implant to its cover), and, lastly, the overlying crown or denture. Implants can be used to replace a single tooth, several adjacent teeth, all missing teeth in the jaw, or to support a removable or fixed denture.
Advantages of dental implants include:
- Natural look and comfortable fit
- Long-lasting and reliable
- High success rate
- Improved ability to eat and chew
- Improved facial and bone features
